New this year to Maker Faire Austin, Spectrum News presents “Project Weather” where you can learn about meteorology and weather preparedness. Meet Chief Meteorologist Burton Fitzsimmons and the Weather on the 1s experts. Activities include: opportunities to pose as a meteorologist in front of Spectrum News’s green screen forecast; flash flood simulator from the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department; wildfire simulator and fire drones from the Austin Fire Department; and hands-on activities by Girlstart.

UT Austin Engineering Hosts ‘Girl Day,’ Biggest Event of its Kind in the U.S.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Women in Engineering Program in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin will host more than 10,000 children, parents and educators from cities across the state for its 17th annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day and Girl Day STEM Festival, a daylong event filled with activities that help spark creativity, inspire future careers and show how engineers and scientists can change the world. Elementary and middle school students will engage in 150 activities and hands-on educational experiences, from designing a balloon-powered car to watching physics and chemistry in action.

With over 1,400 volunteers from UT Austin, nonprofit organizations and local businesses, Girl Day has become the largest event of its kind in the U.S. Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is presented by Halliburton and the Girl Day STEM Festival is presented by Texas Instruments.

When: Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Maker Faire Austin is only 10 days away and we have some exciting new updates.

Schedule
Our schedule is up on our site under Things to Do and See or you can access it directly here!

We’ll be adding more to the schedule over the next week. Currently we have confirmed performances by Austin’s own Total Unicorn, Ponytrap, Dead Music Capital Band, Kyle Evans, and Rose Movement Studio. Additionally there will be presentations ranging from giant 3D printing to edible insects. Plus much, much more!

Maker Pro tip #1: The website and schedule look super good on your smartphone, while at the faire don’t forget to use the site as a resource to find out who is doing what and when.

Fire
This year we put an emphasis on fire and will have a Fire Garden located next to the Power Tool Drag Racing track. Be on the lookout for Maker Faire Austin’s beloved staff member Tim Deagan and his Flaming Christmas Tree and Flame Mobile (think of a golf cart with 100lb propane cylinder, two 7.5 gallon accumulators, and shoots 30’x15′ fireballs!!!) Additionally look for John Cooper’s Fireball V8, a propane boosch, which he built using Tim Deagan’s book (info here) and Jeremy Williams’s Flowers and Machinery, a propane flame sculpture.

Saturday AFTER-PARTY in the DARKROOM!
Once again argodesign and MakerFaire Austin invite you to attend the Think By Making Party, this year benefitting Girls Who Code! From 8 – 11pm there will be music by DJ NickNack, all the darkroom exhibits, a maker fashion show and more.
